Intact Family Services Helps Stressed Parents
Parenting young children can really be a challenge for young parents who have not had good parenting role models themselves. This is the case for “Mike” and “Becky” who were referred to ECFA’s Intact Family Services Program after a founded abuse report. They have an early school age child and a preschooler. Mike became upset with the younger one because of her behavior and slapped her too hard. The incident came to the attention of DCFS and the family was required to become involved with certain services.
Mike is a full-time blue collar worker and Becky works in a retail setting. They are sometimes overly stressed due to having to balance their work schedules in such a way as to provide care for their children. At first, they were somewhat guarded and defensive in talking with their case manager, Stephanie. However, over time they grew to trust her and believe that she is really invested in the best interests of their family.
Mike has successfully completed anger management counseling and parent coaching classes. He has since refrained from using any form of hurtful punishment of the children. He says that he has really benefitted from counseling and plans to continue even after their case is closed with ECFA. Stephanie says that both parents are very cooperative and have been willing to do all that has been asked of them. They were especially touched by the Christmas gifts that were provided for their children and the Christian spirit by which they were given.
Stephanie says that both of the kids are doing very well at this time. The older one is outgoing, playful, pretty, and smart. The young one is very cute and engaging. She greatly enjoyed showing Stephanie around the home and all her favorite things. We are grateful that we were able to provide this family with much needed guidance and direction at a very difficult time in their lives.
